Guest of Honor: Matsubayashi Hosai XVI, Head of Asahiyaki

 As the sixteenth-generation head of Asahiyaki, a kiln with nearly 400 years of history founded in the Keicho era and counted among the Enshu Seven Kilns, Matsubayashi Hosai XVI succeeded to the name in 2016. Grounded in Kobori Enshu’s aesthetic of kirei-sabi, he continues to reinterpret tea ceramics for the present day, from the traditional Kase and Benikase styles to his contemporary Geppaku nagashi glaze. His career also includes a residency at the Leach Potteryin the UK, as well as exhibitions and tea gatherings at the Guimet Museum in Paris.
