Guest of Honor: Kohei Agano, 13th Generation Head of Agano Kiln
Born in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, Kohei Ueno is the thirteenth-generation head of Agano Kiln, the principal house of Yatsushiro ware, a lineage founded in 1602 as the official kiln of the former Hosokawa clan of Higo. After studying metalwork at Tokyo University of the Arts and learning the fundamentals of ceramics in Kyoto, he returned to his home kiln. Inheriting the tradition of celadon inlay, he pursues an expression of Yatsushiro ware that speaks to the present, drawing on the texture of clay and his distinctive sense of color.
